How does paper packaging adhesive perform when dealing with humid extreme environments?

Publish Time: 2025-02-20
The performance of paper packaging adhesive will be significantly affected when dealing with humid extreme environments, as shown below:

1. Reduced bonding strength

In a humid environment, moisture can easily penetrate the adhesive layer and weaken the interfacial bonding between the adhesive and the paper packaging material. Especially when the surface of the paper packaging material is porous, moisture is more likely to penetrate and destroy the chemical bond or physical adsorption between the adhesive and the material, resulting in a significant reduction in bonding strength. This decrease in bonding strength will directly affect the sealing, stability and load-bearing capacity of the paper packaging.

2. Affected curing reaction

Some paper packaging adhesives (such as moisture-curing polyurethane adhesives) may overreact under excessive humidity, forming bubbles or defects. These bubbles and defects will not only reduce the bonding strength of the adhesive, but may also affect the appearance and overall performance of the paper packaging. In addition, for adhesives that require a certain humidity to cure (such as some silicone adhesives), in an overly dry environment, insufficient curing may occur, while in an overly humid environment, the curing reaction may be accelerated, resulting in adverse consequences.

3. Accelerated chemical degradation

The moisture in the humidity will react with certain adhesive components (such as epoxy resin, etc.) to hydrolyze, resulting in degradation of adhesive performance. This chemical degradation process will reduce the weather resistance, heat resistance and chemical corrosion resistance of the adhesive, thereby affecting the long-term service life of the paper packaging.

4. Hygroscopic changes lead to dimensional instability

The adhesive itself has a certain hygroscopicity. When it is in a humid environment, its hygroscopicity will change, resulting in dimensional instability of the adhesive layer. This dimensional instability may cause the paper packaging material to deform, crack or fall off, seriously affecting the packaging effect and protective performance of the paper packaging.

5. Countermeasures

In order to cope with the impact of extreme humid environments on the performance of paper packaging adhesives, the following measures can be taken:

Select adhesives with strong moisture resistance: When selecting paper packaging adhesives, give priority to adhesives with excellent moisture resistance, such as moisture-shielding epoxy resin adhesives or modified silicone adhesives.

Control the humidity of the construction environment: During the construction process, strictly control the humidity of the construction environment to avoid working in an environment that is too humid or too dry.

Surface pretreatment: Surface pretreatment of paper packaging materials, such as coating a moisture-proof layer or drying treatment, to improve the moisture resistance of the material surface.

Strengthen quality inspection: During the production of paper packaging, strengthen the quality inspection of adhesive bonding strength and weather resistance to ensure that the product meets relevant standards and requirements.

The performance of paper packaging adhesive will be significantly affected when dealing with humid and extreme environments. In order to ensure the quality and performance of paper packaging, it is necessary to select suitable adhesives, control the humidity of the construction environment, perform surface pretreatment and strengthen quality inspection.
